What is the Ethics Committee?

The Creative Perspectives Ethics Committee is currently made up of interventionists and clinical staff from Creative Perspectives that have a variety of backgrounds and are interested in health care ethics issues, and who are willing to increase their ethics knowledge and skill. We work together to try to protect the rights of individuals receiving and providing health care services. We also act as a resource for those who make decisions about client care, including clients and families.

Our role is to increase awareness and knowledge and provide supports regarding “ethics” in the greater Denver area. We have four main foci: Clinical Consultation, Ethics Education, Organizational Ethics, and Advancing Theoretical Ethics as it pertains to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness.

For further information please contact the Ethics Committee chair at 303.935.5200.

How can the Ethics Committee help in Ethics Consultation?

The Ethics Committee is available to clients, their families, health care professionals, and community members to help them identify, understand and resolve difficult healthcare ethics questions.

Who can refer for a consultation?

The Ethics Committee will accept referrals from clinicians, staff, clients, client families, and community members where an ethical issue or dilemma regarding client care or treatment exists.

Why would someone be referred?

Generally, ethical questions arise when “the right thing to do” is not clear or when people disagree about what is best for a person who requires care.

How are referrals made?

A referral can be made by filling out the Request for Ethics Consultation form or by emailing the information from the Request for Ethics Consultation form to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it If you need help to decide whether or not an Ethics Consultation would help you, please feel free to talk to the Ethics Committee Chair or any of the Committee members by calling 303.935.5200.

What information is needed?

The Ethics Committee will expect a completed referral form, including:
          - A clear and honest statement of the problem.
          - An idea about what has already been done to deal with the issue.
          - The name of the person(s) making the referral (or a contact person if request is anonymous).
          - An idea of how urgent the problem is.

What results can be expected?

All consultations are confidential and are bound by the same policies and procedures as other client and organizational records.

The Ethics Committee role is advisory only. The final decision about a health related issue lies with the client (or legal representative) and the clinicians/therapists involved.

Ethics consultation provides a facilitated forum for thoughtful exploration of how to act well and make morally good choices based on beliefs and values about life, health, happiness, and suffering.
